‘Don’t make the mistake of missing yourself out. You’re very much involved and playing this game, or whatever the hell it is, whether you want to admit it or not. Remember that. For your own sake but for others too.’

Eric prowled across the floor, smelt Crabb’s shoes and then jumped onto Annie’s lap. She pulled gently at his whiskers, making him yawn. Said, ‘I haven’t forgotten I’m involved, Crabb. How could I? But what do you mean, for others too?’

‘Who else do you love, Annie? They may be at risk.’

Scarlet said, waggling her eyebrows for comic effect, ‘Not me. Please not me. You hate me.’

Annie couldn’t even dredge up a smile but said, ‘It has to follow the killer’s pattern so far, so someone deaf.’

Crabb repeated, ‘So, who do you love, Annie. Think.’

‘I don’t know. Polly. Dora. Fiona. She shrugged helplessly. ‘There are lots of people I love, obviously hearing people as well, but from this Deaf Club, this community, only those three, I suppose. So, start worrying about them. I’ll be fine.’

If she said ‘I’ll be fine’, with enough conviction, she could temporarily convince herself that she believed her own words.

Crabb tilted his head to the side, ‘Why Polly?’

Annie stood up, suddenly pissed off. ‘Why not Polly? She’s a good friend. She’s different, has her own unique style, is sophisticated, doesn’t live and die by the bloody Deaf Club, has a life. She’s intelligent, artistic, has her own weird ideas about things, she makes me laugh. I trust her. There, is that good enough for you, Crabb?’

Annie knew that she wasn’t really angry with Crabb, but was only directing her anger at him as he was in her firing line. She wasn’t sure she was even angry: more frightened. Frightened that at this stage, there were three people whose existence was threatened. Any one of them, or maybe all of them, could die.

Because of Annie.

Because of something that she’d done.

Because she’d pissed off the wrong person.
